The town was settled in 1834 before it took off with the growth of flour mills, railroads, steam sawmills, and the natural gas industry. The Red Bridge, built in 1870, became the talk of the town, which was the first bridge to be transformed into a covered bridge; however, is was torn down in 1950s. But it was eventually turned into Red Bridge Park, offering walking paths, a pool, playground equipment, and outdoor restroom facilities.
