Deciding to buy a new home for the first time is a big deal. Deciding to buy a new home fresh out of college and be completely on your own for the first time is an even bigger deal. However, it was an easy choice for Hannah, who never wanted to use her hard-earned savings for anything other than a home of her own!

Read our interview with Hannah to learn more about her experience buying a townhome with M/I Homes.

M/I Homes: Is this your first home purchase? And what convinced you to choose M/I Homes over another builder?

Hannah Rushing: Yes it is my first home purchase! I’m currently living at home so this is a big step. I am 24. I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 2019, and I moved back home after that. I didn’t want to use my money for renting because I’ve saved money my whole life, and I didn’t want a big house because I didn’t want to have to worry about maintenance or anything. When I saw that townhomes were being built in Monroe, it worked out perfectly because I wanted something like that.

M/I: What drew you to our townhomes, and which plan did you choose?

HR: I wanted a townhome because I didn’t want to rent an apartment, and a house would require yard work. With my townhome, the yard work is being taken care of for me which is so nice.

I chose the Wylie—it is the smallest option available and is the perfect size since it will just be me living there.

M/I: How did you find Kellerton Place?

HR: I’m actually from Monroe, and right now I live about 5 to 8 minutes from Kellerton Place. My mom told me about the VIP list and I added myself to that list.

M/I: What do you like about your community?

HR: Hopefully it will bring in younger people, specifically more young adults. There are many families around so I’m glad there is now an option to bring in other people around my age.

M/I: How was your overall experience with M/I Homes? Do you have a fun or special memory from your buying process?

HR: I had a great time doing everything, but it was nerve-wracking at times because I purchased my townhome through a lottery, and you never know what will happen with that. I took time to choose which townhome I wanted and I kept hoping that no one else would pick the same one. Luckily, I was the only entry for mine so it worked out in the best way! If I hadn’t won the first time, I probably would have kept trying.

Stephanie Davis was my New Home Consultant and honestly she made everything so much fun because of her personality. It was really fun to get to customize it myself and make it the way I wanted it.

M/I: What are you looking forward to the most in your townhome?

HR: I’m really looking forward to putting my own personal touch on the home by decorating and customizing it. I’m also looking forward to being on my own for the first time and really experiencing adulthood in my own townhome.

M/I: Do you have any advice for someone that might want to buy their first home?

HR: Don’t second-guess yourself! If you are thinking about doing it, just do it. If you are worried about the money part, focus on all of the good things that will come of it instead. Go for it!
