The first taste of spring happens in North Carolina in February or March, tricking your perennials into their first bloom, which might convince you into planting your other flowers a little too early.
The prime time to get flower bulbs in the ground would have been last fall, before the cold set in; however, most people enjoy getting their hands in the dirt this time of year once the sun is out, the last frost has passed, and the temperature starts to get up around 65 or 70 degrees.
If you are like these folks, then it’s okay to head to your local nursery or hardware store and pick up some flowers that are ready to be planted!
Here are 5 of the best flowers to plant in North Carolina and get in the ground around mid-April to add some life and color to your outdoor spaces.
Pansies
Pansies come in a variety of colors, making them a great addition to your front porch area or garden. Since they still thrive with a chill in the air, pansies are a perfect early spring flower to pick up and plant.
A pansy also loves sunlight, so you should plant it in a spot where it can catch as many rays as possible. These flowers will stay around for a while, too.
Violas
The smaller sister of the pansy, the viola, is another sun-loving beauty that will add character to your flower beds this spring.
Space them out when you plant them so that you allow for plenty of space for them to bloom. You can use them to cover your beds and fill in any spaces around your larger species.
Marigolds
Shades of gold, brass, and orange are offered with marigolds. They need lots of sun, and they will survive through the summer months as well.
African marigolds, pictured here, are best planted in early spring after the frosts end because they are slower to mature and need extra time to reach their full potential, which is why it’s sometimes easier to plant them as transplants and give each plant plenty of water once in the ground!
Yellow Dahlias
Dahlias will add gorgeous pops of yellow in your garden or flower bed. These should be planted in an area that receives full sun in order to help them look their best.
Gerbera Daisies
These annuals love sun and bloom in the spring, summer, and fall, giving you pretty blooms almost year-round.
