As the need for extra space in the home grows, so does the flexABILITY of our home floorplans, especially with so many professionals working from home.

Lifestyle and wellness blogger Katie Shaffer and her fiancé recently decided to build her first home with M/I Homes in Poplin Grove, and a huge factor in their floorplan decision was whether or not the plan had a flex space.

As you heard from Katie, it's nice to have office space without giving up an extra bedroom. We are so excited to be building Katie's first home and catering it to her lifestyle. Be sure to check out her Instagram account to follow along with her home building journey!

Multipurpose / Flex Room Ideas

When you have a multipurpose room dedicated to work, school, fitness, relaxation, or creativity, you will ultimately set yourself up for a more organized household!

Get inspiration for some of the best uses for multipurpose / flex space in your home.

Home Office

Working from home can sometimes eliminate boundaries that are typically in place, like separating your work and home life. So, instead of working in your personal space, you can save those boundaries by dedicating a room specifically for work.

Home Office

When you set aside a space strictly for work, it allows you to be fully isolated from the noise or distractions outside of that space. Some work looks like a desk with a computer, while other work looks like an easel with canvases or a craft explosion.

Whatever your work looks like, you should choose a space with good lighting to set up your desk or easel and make sure you have all of the equipment you need to enhance your workflow and keep you organized!

Home Gym

To avoid trips to the gym and utilize your home's flex space, set up a home gym or yoga room!

Creating a room for working out or practicing yoga provides the perfect place at home to relax and forget about any external stress.

Doing Yoga at Home

You can also furnish this room with some weights, resistance bands, and an exercise bike to vary the types of home workouts you can do.

Mixed-Use Rooms

Once you have decided what to do with a flex room, you can explore ways to maximize the space even further with combination spaces. Sure, a home office is nice, but what will you do about an unexpected weekend guest? You work from home but also need a space to practice yoga or meditate. Now what?

  • Blend your workspace and guest room. Have your desk and chair share the room with a daybed or a pull-out couch, giving guests a comfy, private place to stay when they visit.
  • Office by day, zen room by night. When you choose a well-lit space for your office, it will let in the warm sunset light later in the day when it's time to unwind. Pair that with a peaceful playlist and a spot for a yoga mat, and you're good to go.
  • Keep your crafts and weights organized. If you have a designated room for you or the kids to craft in, you can use cabinets and shelves to store away materials, leaving open floor space for exercise. You can also create a space to tuck away your weights, bands, and mat when you're not using them.
Guest Room With a Desk

Whether for working or for being creative, your home should reflect you and your lifestyle, and having a flexible room capable of changing with you is a huge benefit you'll love for years to come in your new home!
