A beautiful headboard can make or break your bedroom design. It can create visual interest, tie together multiple elements, and make a room look complete. Without a headboard, a bedroom can look empty—but so will your wallet if you purchase a headboard from the store.
Headboards are expensive, typically costing hundreds of dollars. Luckily, they’re also one of the most doable DIY furniture projects. The options are endless and because of the simple construction, they are easy for new do-it-yourselfers to tackle.
Here are a few examples of what you can do with some creativity, the right materials, and a little help.
A Moroccan Design
Would you believe that the headboards can actually made out of doormats? The doormats, a little paint, wood, and ingenuity were all it took to make this headboard.
Crafted by Kara Paslay, an interior designer out of Tulsa, Okla., the simple tutorial appears on her website. The total cost hovers around $100, a savings of about $200 to $300 off purchasing one.
A Headboard of Shutters
The shutters for this headboard were a $5 thrifting find. This headboard cost DIY blogger Kiki Comin just under $25 to make. With the help of her husband, it only took one afternoon to assemble; a tutorial is posted on her blog, Kiki and Company.
“It actually came together really easily,” she said. “We had planned it out prior, so we knew what we wanted. All it took were the right measurements and luckily, we got those right the first time.”
A friend grabbed the shutters at a thrift store for $5 and gave them to Comin, who got to work immediately with a few extra pieces of wood, paint, some screws, and crown molding.
A Few Tips From the Pros
If these designs aren’t exactly what you’re looking for, there are hundreds of DIY headboards out there and lots of friendly designers, bloggers, and crafty men and women to guide you through building your own.
- Be exact with measurements. You don’t want to run out of materials or make an uneven headboard. Don’t get too frustrated if you do make a mistake—that will happen, especially if you’re new to creating your own furniture.
- Take your time. Don’t rush through a project just to get it done. You will minimize mistakes and build a product you’re much happier with than something slapped together.
- Don’t go it alone. Headboards are large and cumbersome, and without a little help—someone to hold while you nail—the project may get out of control relatively quickly.
