Houston Jazz Festival: Put this one on your September calendar if you love colorful, innovative jazz musicians and bands as well as growing your education about jazz!
Soul Flower Music Festival: Dubbed the most beautiful event of the year, at this event attendees can expect a day full of great food, shopping, and of course music—Hip-Hop, Soul, and R&B.
Food Events
Rodeo Houston’s Bar-B-Que Contest: This is the world championship, where finalists go head-to-head to compete for who has the worldwide best barbecue! Take in a true Texas experience with a complimentary southern meal, live music, and a carnival.
Houston Restaurant Weeks: This annual event every August–September is the largest annual fundraiser in support of the Houston Food Bank, so you’ll be joining an excellent cause as well as indulging in top-notch food. With an extremely impressive lineup and several dates to choose from, make sure to purchase your tickets while you can!
Art Events
Bayou City Art Festival: 50 years in the running, this amazing art experience debuts local artists and is held at Sam Houston Park in October. Proceeds support local nonprofit organizations throughout the Greater Houston area.
Houston Cinema Arts Festival and WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival: Film aficionados will have two incredible film fest options to choose from each year:
- Houston Cinema Arts Festival is globally recognized and really adds to Houston’s notoriety. The Houston Cinema Arts Society fosters local and global filmmaker talent to provide a space for burgeoning talent to really take off. Attend this event in November.
- WorldFest is the oldest indie film festival in the world, and its founder has received over 100 international awards! With some of the biggest names in television represented at this event, you can expect to witness some of the biggest talent in the industry.
Via Colori Houston: Every April you can come out to see the most stunning chalk art at this free outdoor event! This wonderful art festival connects art to emotion, spearheaded by the Institute for Spirituality and Health.
Cultural Events
Puerto Rican & Cuban Festival: The PRC Festival uses educational, immersive experiences to celebrate Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Caribbean heritage. Activities include dances, a wide variety of authentic food, local art displays, and music!
Japan Festival Houston: Put on by the Japan-America Society of Houston, this engaging event boasts outdoor theater, traditional music, martial arts, crafts, and so much more. You can attend this free event at Hermann Park.
Houston Greek Fest: In May, indulge in scrumptious Greek food, enjoy cultural dance performances, and take a tour through one of Houston’s most beautiful churches.
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo: This one should obviously be on your list to really get to know Houston, Texas. Before you go, you can get the low-down on what to expect so at least you don’t feel like it’s your first rodeo!
Children’s Events
Houston Art Car Parade: This truly unique 4-day show of decorated vehicles from various states and countries is a spectacle to behold for families each year. Don’t miss out on this amazing celebration, complete with kid-friendly activities!
Freedom Over Texas: Take the whole family to the annual July 4th event that displays an over-the-top fireworks show that guests just can’t get enough of each year. With live concerts and food and drink options, this extreme event is televised and supports the Houston Food Bank.
H-E-B Thanksgiving Day Parade: You just have to experience this wonderful fall event in Downtown Houston—it’s one of the oldest Thanksgiving parades in the country and has so much to take in!
