The fun thing about design these days is that you don’t have to stay with that proverbial box any more. As a matter of fact, design tends to become more interesting when you push the envelope a bit. And this is exactly what we’re seeing in our new model homes in the Raleigh market.

Let’s take wallpaper for example. Traditionally, we think wallpaper should be on wall. Not any longer! We’re seeing rooms brought to light with some very unique uses of the wallpaper. Coffered ceilings become even more intriguing with textured and pattered wallpapers. This treatment is a wonderful way to add depth and texture into a room and really showcase the craftsmanship of the ceiling beams.

Another interesting application I have seen is to pull complimentary wallpaper patterns into the accessories of the room. For example, we have a little girl’s room decorated with the cutest blue polka-dot Kate Spade wallpaper. By choosing a second pattern from the same line, the designers created custom covered lamp shades. How adorable is that! And, there’s no concern whatsoever about if the patters go together or if colors will match perfectly.

In our Glendale townhome model at Andrews Chapel in Durham, NC, the use of trim with wallpaper inserts was an interesting alternative to oversized art that can’t be properly viewed or chunky console cabinets that will collect dust. This is a great treatment for a narrow hallway where furniture is not an option.

And, if wallpaper on the ceiling is a bit too much and you really prefer your wallpaper to be on the actual walls, take a look at this tall wainscoting with wallpaper accent at the top. It’s a great way to add pattern and color without impeding the functionality of a room. Did you check out those amazing green doors? That’s for another post.

So, whether you’re planning how you’ll decorate your new M/I Home, or just looking for ways to put a fresh spin on your current home, consider using wallpaper in a new way. It can really help a room come to life.
