You're in the market for a home, and you've decided to build new. What factors should you take into account when comparing different home builders? We've made a quick list for your consideration.

Are there new construction communities in an ideal area for your needs?

From safety of the area surrounding the neighborhood to nearby amenities and attractions that afford you and your family the conveniences and necessities you're looking for, keep location in mind. Your commute should also be a big component of where you choose to build.

It's also worth pointing out that a new home development could be going up in an up-and-coming part of town, so keep on the lookout for news articles and other updates about the location. Your new home could eventually be a walkable distance from shopping, schools, and your favorite local restaurant!

Does the builder offer floorplans and home designs that suit your specific needs?

When designing and building your dream home, you'll want to work closely with a team of experts who can help your vision come to life. You also don't want to feel rushed through this process, as carefully expressing your desires and requirements for your home is a big step in making sure communication flows freely and successfully through all channels.

Look carefully at available home plan options during your home search. It's possible that there are home design features that could be the perfect solution for the space and flow you crave in your new abode.

How willing is the builder to keep in close communication throughout the process of building a house?

When you select the home builder that offers the home design and location you're looking for, make sure to sit down with the New Home Consultant at the community and ask however many questions you have about the process. For example:

  • "It's my first time building a new home. Can you talk me through each step and be there when I have questions? Can I easily get in touch with you over phone or email?"
  • "How often can I expect to receive regular updates on my home's construction?"
  • "What extra measures are taken to make sure my home is going to be built to last?"

Whether it's your first time building a new home or you're no stranger to the new construction process, your entire experience should be as stress-free as possible so that you can enjoy each part of selecting and designing your new home. Here's how some of M/I's homeowners feel about our process:

"From the very moment I looked at the model to the final walk through and purchase of the house, they provided step by step instruction, and followed through on everything they said would happen. It was an easy process from beginning to end." - Thomas, Homeowner in Chicago, IL

"My experience was very positive. The service was fantastic. The personnel were very responsive, and this helped to create a wonderful experience. The home is wonderful; we love the quality." - Alison, Homeowner in San Antonio, TX

"The M/I Homes experience is wonderful. Buying and building a home should not be a stressful experience, and M/I Homes makes it an enjoyable experience. Your home is your castle and you should feel overwhelmed with joy on closing day." - Gregory, Homeowner in Tampa, FL
