The smell of freshly painted walls.

The sparkle of new stainless steel appliances.

The smoothness of brand new floors underfoot.

The suspense of empty rooms waiting to be decorated.

Welcome home.

Home Exterior at Evening

We wanted to celebrate that very first night of your move-in process by sharing some of our homeowners’ stories of how they settled into home sweet home!

Your first evening in your new home: boxes everywhere, mattresses sprawled out on the floor, takeout and disposable champagne glasses on the kitchen island, and lots of giggles and selfies.

You made it all the way through the process, and now it’s time to make your home yours!

But first—celebrate a little.

Champagne Bottle and Glasses

Out of a recent M/I Homes survey, hundreds of homeowners told us their favorite parts of their homes and their home buying journeys.*

41% of those homeowners told us they celebrated with a housewarming party—no surprise there, considering how much fun it is to show off your new home!

A housewarming party does put the pressure on to get moved in and decorate faster, so other homeowners told us, “We had spent the previous 8 months in an apartment, so we just partied till we dropped!”

Family Dancing at Home on Moving Day

Others told us that a quiet and intimate celebration was more up their alley: one simple pizza box and a couple beer bottles are definitely much easier to clean up!

Or, you might not feel like celebrating at all until the last moving box is unpacked—we understand!

Moving day can definitely be an exhausting, stressful day, but our advice is to allow yourself to enjoy each milestone and make the process fun!

Here are our top moving day tips:

  1. Keep kids/pets busy
  2. Gather moving day essentials
  3. Consolidate the mess from unpacking
  4. If relocating, embrace your new neighborhood

Even if you’re on a time crunch during your move, keeping spirits up and stress low will make the whole process seem easier and quicker.

Savor each first: pulling into your driveway for the first time, unlocking the door for the first time, unpacking the first (and the last) box, hanging the first picture on the wall, finishing the first (and last) bedroom, and so on.

Keep your camera ready, too. Precious memories are waiting to be made as each member wanders through every new room.

One homeowner told us that the absolute best part of moving day was “seeing the expression on my family’s faces when we finally moved in.”

That’s definitely one for the family photo album!

Kids Playing in Moving Boxes

At the end of the day, walk around your new home, close any open windows, lock any unlocked doors, turn off all lights, immerse yourself in the senses of all things new.

New paint, new flooring, new cabinets, new air conditioning—they all have their own smell.

Your new home has new sounds: hear them? That’s the sound of new.

Rest, relax, sleep soundly.

Tomorrow you wake up in new.
