Moving day is an exhilarating time in life! As thoughts of decorating your new dream home flood your mind, you begin envisioning the years to come and getting caught up in the excitement, making it easy to forget some of the common moving day essentials.

With all the packing and planning, these below necessities will help make your transition an easier one. Here are nine first day move-in essentials you may want to strongly consider bringing with you or purchasing shortly after arriving in your new home.

Cleaning Supplies

Your newly purchased home from M/I Homes will be in tip-top shape prior to your move-in, but having some extra cleaning supplies on hand won’t hurt, especially because your new floors can get somewhat dirty during the move-in process. Some essential cleaning supplies to bring with you include:

  • Paper Towels
  • Multi-Purpose Cleaning Spray – This is great for surfaces such as countertops and faucets. You may want to give the inside of the refrigerator a quick wipe-down as well.
  • Vacuum
  • Hand Towels and Sponges – You’ll need this to quickly wash dishes and silverware for your first meal or two in your new home.
  • Dishwasher Detergent
  • Laundry Detergent
  • Broom and Dustpan
  • Toilet Bowel Cleaner and Wand
  • …And Trash Bags!

Corkscrew and Drinkware

You’ve finally settled into your dream home after a busy day of moving, and what better to end a hard day’s work than with a celebratory glass of wine or champagne! Don’t forget to pop a corkscrew and couple of glasses into your carry-along bag so you have the essentials when you’re ready to relax. (Psst: the best kind of glasses to pack? Ones you can throw in those trash bags when the bottle is empty!)

Clothing Hangers

When it’s time to hang your clothes in your closet to avoid too much wrinkling, there’s nothing worse than having to tear open several boxes to find hangers. If you aren’t keeping your clothes on hangers when you pack them, it’s good to have them marked in a separate plastic bag within easy reach.

Often overlooked, these little necessities are important to not forget and to readily have on hand. Not much is worse than wanting to turn on the TV to relax and the remote is dead with no replacement batteries in sight.

Toothbrush and Toothpaste

It’s especially good to know where your toothbrush is located. These small-sized necessities fit nicely in a small toiletry bag so you can go to sleep feeling fresh in your new home.

Also often overlooked is a toolkit. Odds are, the first day or week you’ll need it for something! Make sure your toolkit includes an Allen wrench as some furniture requires this handy tool for assembly. Other tools to include are:

  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Wrench
  • Drill
  • Measuring Tape
  • Pliers
  • Utility Knife (for opening boxes)

Toilet Paper

One thing you will definitely want nearby is toilet paper. This is pretty self-explanatory, but people often forget this daily necessity, and the last thing you’ll want is to be left yelling from the bathroom for someone to sift through dozens of unopened boxes to find the toilet paper!

Towels and Shower Necessities

Ahh… there’s nothing better than the first morning waking up in your brand new home. You’ll rise and shine and most likely want to freshen up after all of the manual labor moving boxes you’ve been doing. Having a bottle of shampoo and conditioner, soap, and a couple towels on hand will allow you to begin your first day in your new home at your best, smelling fresh and clean.

More than ever, moving day is a time where the kids may be on their devices to keep them occupied, and you may need to use your phone to communicate more than usual with movers or family and friends, or simply to look up the nearest grocery store or food delivery service. Making sure you have all appropriate chargers easily accessible is essential to keeping you in the loop and making sure things run smoothly.

Having these items nearby will help make your experience moving into your dream home an enjoyable one! Want even more lists of things to do when moving? Here are a recent pro’s moving tips firsthand!
