As a homeowner, having the right details in your decorations can be just as important as having a floorplan that you love. We notice when rugs aren’t straight or when furniture sits at an awkward angle. Another design detail we always catch? Lack of ample lighting. Oftentimes, important elements of a room’s design can be overlooked in poor lighting or shadows. A fantastic way to add the perfect amount of luminosity to a space is by using floor lamps. Whether your room needs an extra piece of furniture or could use some added height, floor lamps do both, all while adding a touch of brightness. Keep reading for some of our favorite ways to insert floor lamps into different room designs.
1. Arc Lamp
With the turn of the century, we saw design concepts mold and change to fit the new generation of customers. This new group of clientele looked for pieces that were creative and artistic, but also something that would meet their needs and be extremely functional. The arc lamp did just that. With a solid metal frame and stoic style, this light source usually features stunning finishes like brushed steel, solid chrome, or brass. As the name would imply, this lamp arcs over a key piece of furniture, most often in the living room.
The arc lamp was a must-have in the 1970’s and is making its resurgence again today. Now it can be found in feminine finishes and contemporary styles, sometimes with more than one arm or shade. This versatile style not only adds the perfect amount of light to a family room or reading nook, but it also functions as a stand-alone art piece, perfect for the minimalist homeowner or maximalist decorator.
2. Pedestal Light
A traditional pedestal lamp can transform a space based on its coloring, finish, shade, or base style while also adding a key layer of light. For an extra kick, tuck a pedestal style lamp into the corner to cast a glow in your living room. Keep the rest of the space on an overhead dimmer for the perfect movie night ambiance. You could also add a crisp geometric lamp to your bedroom reading nook, featuring a shade just a touch darker than white for a light that is soft and welcoming.
3. Layered Lighting
If you’ve ever decorated a home, you know that several layers of light are needed in order to perfectly illuminate a space. You’ll need overhead lighting to illuminate the space, task lighting for morning and nighttime rituals, and accent floor lamps for an extra oomph as needed.
Still, lighting has a way of adding clutter if it isn’t the perfect fit. Make sure to measure out the area to ensure that the base of the lamp tucks comfortably into its spot and has plenty of room for wiring and additional hardware. Also, it’s a good idea to check the height of the sitting area to which you plan on adding an arced or overhead lamp. You don’t want your guests knocking their noggins on a low-hanging lamp!
